The Nuremberg Celestial Phenomenon of 1561

Hundreds of years before anyone had the word "UFO," a German city witnessed a sky full of strange shapes fighting each other at dawn — and a contemporary artist made a printed woodcut of it that still survives today.

On April 14, 1561, residents of Nuremberg, Germany reported witnessing an elaborate aerial spectacle of numerous unusual shapes, described in a contemporary printed account as appearing to "fight" one another in the sky at dawn. The event was documented in a surviving contemporary woodcut and pamphlet, making it one of the earliest detailed printed records of a mass unexplained aerial sighting, predating the modern UFO phenomenon by centuries.

Quick facts
  • The event occurred at dawn on April 14, 1561, over the city of Nuremberg, then part of the Holy Roman Empire.
  • A contemporary printed broadsheet, including a detailed woodcut illustration, described numerous unusual shapes — including described globes, crosses, and tube-like forms — appearing to move and "fight" against one another in the sky.
  • The broadsheet was produced by Hans Glaser, a known contemporary printer, and represents a real, physically surviving period document rather than a later retelling.
  • Modern researchers have proposed various explanations, including an atmospheric optical phenomenon called a sun dog or parhelion display, though no single explanation has achieved full consensus.
